Sad news today. Adam Yauch (aka MCA) of the Beastie Boys has lost his battle with cancer and has died. He was only 47 years old.
The Beastie Boys were one of the most influential groups in Hip Hop history not just because they were white but because they were so good. They weren’t a gimmick, they could really rap and they came with a whole new point of view.
Their first album, License To Ill, was groundbreaking for its use of hard rock samples. But it was their second album, Paul’s Boutique, that really changed the face of Hip Hop. It was so sample heavy that it could never be reproduced again.
Yauch, along with his band mates Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad Rock), was a Hip Hop visionary. They weathered the storm of Gangsta Rap, Bling Bling and Puffy’s reign of terror and never gave in to what was popular at the time. They stayed true to their image and continued to create great music.
Adam Yauch will truly be missed. Creative people like him don’t come into this very often and we are all better off having been able to hear his voice.
